The dusky robin is found in open eucalypt forest, woodland and coastal heath throughout Tasmania. It can often be seen sitting on stumps and fence posts. Indeed, this practice earned it the name 'stump robin' by early settlers.
It is about 16 to 17 centimetres (six to seven inches) tall and a uniform olive brown with a whitish streak in the wings.
It breeds in early spring (October to November), laying three to four spotted pale green eggs.
