What are the quarantine restrictions when coming to Tasmania?

Tasmania is free of most of the serious animal diseases and plant pests that occur elsewhere.  This freedom is one of the many reasons why Tasmania is such a great place to live or visit.  Tasmania has a strong biosecurity system to help keep it that way.  Some things that are allowed into mainland states are prohibited or restricted entry into Tasmania.

  • You may not bring fresh fruit or vegetables, uncooked fish, any plants in the Myrtaceae family (which includes eucalypts, bottlebrush, tea tree and willow myrtle),  or any wildlife (native or feral) into Tasmania.  Many other things are either restricted or require a special permit before you can bring them into Tasmania, so please check the Quarantine Tasmania website beforehand.

  • If you bring a dog into Tasmania, it must be treated for hydatid tapeworm.  Tasmania is the only state to be free of hydatids, which is a disease that can infect humans via dogs.  You will need to treat your dog with a wormer that contains praziquantel – there are several over-the-counter products available.  When you and your dog arrive in Tasmania, you will need proof of treatment – a note from your vet or, if you dose the dog yourself, the pill packet and a dated receipt  is sufficient.  Details about what is required are on the DPIPWE website.

  • If you bring any boat, boating gear, diving gear  or fishing gear (including waders) into Tasmania,  it must be thoroughly clean and dry when you arrive.  This is to minimise the risk of aquatic pests and  diseases such as abalone viral ganglioneuritis, caulerpa and didymo getting into Tasmania.   You should download the checklist from the DPIPWE website and present that to Quarantine Tasmania on your arrival.
