Which wine varieties are particularly good in Tasmania and where are they grown?

Some of Australia's best sparklings are Tasmanian, while you'll find the state's Pinot is complex and intense.

Tasmanian Riesling is excellent, and its Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are highly regarded. You may also enjoy sampling our Gerwurtztraminer and Pinot Gris – varieties that are gaining a reputation.

Vineyards are dotted throughout Tasmania, so you’ll often be able to drop into a winery on your way to other attractions. However, if you are looking forward to a whole day or afternoon of wine tasting at cellar doors, try one of the following regions:

  • the Tamar Valley, north-west of Launceston
  • Pipers Brook and the Pipers River area, north-east of Launceston
  • the Coal River Valley, north-east of Hobart
