Hunter Island Group, Trefoil Island Group and Petrel Island Group

Hunter Island Group

Made up of Hunter Island, Robbins Island, Three Hummock Island, Steep Island, Nares Rock, Bird Island, Stack Island, Dugay Islet, Edwards Islet, Penguin Islet, Bears Island, Albatross Island, Black Pyramid Island and South Black Rock.

Three Hummock Island is almost 7,000 hectares (17,000 acres) and part of the island is a nature reserve. It sits off the north-west tip of Tasmania beyond Robbins Island. There is a small settlement at Chimney Corner, a muttonbird hut at the north-east tip, a lighthouse at Cape Rochon, three airstrips, roads, fencing and a wharf. Seasonal muttonbirding takes place between March and April; the Commonwealth Government visits the island to maintain the lighthouse.

Breeding seabirds include the little penguin, short-tailed shearwater, Pacific gull, pied oystercatcher and sooty oystercatcher. Other seabirds seen on the island include the black-faced cormorant, the great cormorant and the Australian pelican.

Trefoil Island Group

Made up of Doughboy Island East, Doughboy Island West, Trefoil Island, Seacrow Islet, Henderson Islets, Harbour Islets, Murkay Islet (East), Murkay Islets (Middle), Murkay Islets (West) and Shell Islets.

Trefoil Island is private property, owned by the Trefoil Island Aboriginal Co-operative. Approval is required prior to visiting. The island is 1.8 kilometres (1.1 miles) long by 1.1 kilometres (0.7 miles) at the widest point and rises steeply from the sea to a height of 84 metres in the south and east and 60 metres (64 yards), in the north and west. An airstrip and huts exist at several localities on the Island.

Breeding seabirds include the little penguin, short-tailed shearwater, Pacific gull, silver gull, sooty oystercatcher and pied oystercatcher. Native birds include the Cape Barren goose, Pacific black duck, swamp harrier, brown falcon, masked lapwing, crescent honeyeater, pallid cuckoo and willie wagtail.

Petrel Island Group

Made up of South West Petrel Island, Little Stony Petrel Island, Big Stony Petrel Island, Big Sandy Petrel Island, Half Tide Rock, Kangaroo Island and Howie Island.

Like all of the Petrel Islands, Big Stony Petrel Island is a game reserve, subject to the harvesting of short-tailed shearwaters. It is 7.2 hectares (17 acres) and has breeding seabirds such as the little penguin, short-tailed shearwater, common diving petrel, white-faced storm-petrel, Pacific and silver gull, sooty oystercatcher, black-faced cormorant and Caspian tern.
