Fees, Licences etc.

Your guide to appropriate fees and licences necessary to fish in Tasmania.

Who Needs a Licence?

You do not need a licence for salt water or marine fishing with a rod and line but an Inland Fisheries Licence is required for any fishing in inland waters, which includes some river mouths and estuaries.

A recreational sea fishing licence is required for any of the following types of fishing:

  • Abalone (taken by any legal method)
  • Rock lobster dive (fisher must be over 10 years old)
  • Rock lobster pot (fisher must be over 10 years old)
  • Rock lobster rings (fisher must be over 10 years old)
  • Graball net
  • Mullet net
  • Beach seine net
  • Scallop dive

The licensing year begins on 1 November. Licences are valid from the date of issue to 31 October. Separate seasons apply for rock lobster and scallops.

The licence holder must personally set and retrieve any fishing gear that requires a sea fishing licence.

Fishing Licences and Fees

Angling licences prices vary and concessions are available for children and seniors. For more information check with the Tasmanian Inland Fisheries Service.

Most Tasmanian waters are open for angling but check the regulations for details and gear restrictions, as there are some fly fishing only and artificial lure fishing waters.

  • Tackle shops are an excellent source of advice and also provide licences.
  • You can buy your licence online at ifs.tas.gov.au and for more information or call the Inland Fisheries Service on 61 (0) 3 6233 4140 or email infish@ifs.tas.gov.au.
