Garden Itinerary - 2 Days: Garden Highlights of Launceston Tamar Valley and the North-East

Take a short break and be inspired by the beautiful gardens of northern Tasmania. To ensure a relaxing holiday stop for a night or two in one of the pretty country towns along the way.

From Launceston, travel north along the Tamar Valley Touring Route (A7) to Lavender House at Rowella (C724). Here more than 60 different lavenders flower between August and May - aromatic and visually pleasing in the gardens but also providing important ingredients for aromatherapy and skin-care products recognised nationally. Visit the tea rooms, to indulge in lavender buttermilk scones.   Informative guided tours are available.
Along this journey discover some of the many interesting vineyards with cellar door facilities that form the Tamar Valley Wine Route.

After crossing the Batman Bridge (B73), drop in to the Hillwood Strawberry Farm at Hillwood, for daffodils in spring, and in summer, masses of roses.

At nearby Nabowla (B81) is the Bridestowe Estate Farm. Est ablished in 1921, Bridestowe is one of the world's largest single commercial lavender farms, producing the finest quality flowers and oil. The 48 hectares of lavender are a spectacular sight during peak flowering months of December and January. Guided tours of the processing and distillation plant are conducted during harvest months.

Travelling towards Scottsdale on the North-East Trail Touring Route (B71 to A3), enter the area known as the North-East Garden Lovers Trail (E7 &E8).   Pick up a printed guide from the Scottsdale Visitor Information Centre and embark on a journey of discovery of the region, including Highview Garden and Nursery at Ringarooma. Its display garden is an example of how to use plant colour, form and structure to create a garden of interest and individuality.

Return to Launceston to complete your Gardens journey.
