Local markets let you take the pulse of a place: how the community gets along and what they value.
Of course, it’s also the best place to find the best produce from nearby farms and gardens; what’s seasonal; who’s growing what organically and what the best prices are. You also get a chance to check out the local antiques; the young designer with his or her latest styles; the craftsman or woman selling local timber wares.
But best of all you get to wander to your heart’s content, people-watching and being seduced by the tempting aromas of country bread, sizzling Bratwurst or freshly brewed coffee beans.
Tasmanian markets range from the mammoth Saturday Salamanca Market, to the popular Penguin Market, but of course there are many in between. Saturdays and Sundays are the usual market days.
The Market is northern Tasmania’s largest market, offering over 100 stalls, located in Penguin.
