Forest Reserves

Many popular attractions and walks are in state forest reserves.

From the thrilling cantilevered Tahune Forest AirWalk 48 metres (157.5 feet) above the confluence of the Picton and Huon rivers to the mysteries of a forested sinkhole 40 metres (131 feet) deep at Tarkine Forest Adventures - Dismal Swamp, our state forests are places of outdoor adventure, rejuvenation and learning.

You can enjoy activities that can't be permitted in national parks, such as horse-riding and mountain-biking. And in state forests you can camp just about anywhere.

In addition to visitor centres at Tahune and Tarkine Adventures (Dismal Swamp) sites, Forestry Tasmania operates a forestry exhibition in Hobart, and an interactive forest interpretative centre at Scottsdale. These innovatively designed centres are excellent places to learn about forest habitats, communities, landscapes, history and visitor opportunities.

The roads in Tasmania's state forests are generally in good condition but many are unsealed. Some state forests are wood-production forests, so expect to meet log trucks. Most of the trees are native species - mainly eucalypt hardwoods, together with some special timbers such as blackwood, myrtle and celery-top pine. However, some areas have been planted with radiata pine and other exotic species to provide softwood.

Visit the Forestry Tasmania website for a full list of all its reserves.
