Mount Barrow, approximately 45 minutes' drive north-east of Launceston, is one of the tallest mountains of the north-eastern highlands, at 1,413 metres (4,636 feet). If you're a bushwalker, you'll appreciate the magnificent views, rainforest and alpine vegetation.
The Mt Barrow Discovery Trail guide, produced by Forestry Tasmania, guides you along the 24-kilometre (15-mile) return loop drive to the mountain from the highway, enabling you to appreciate the rich tradition of timber harvesting and saw milling of the Mount Barrow state forests, which dates back to the 1830s.
Mount Barrow is 46 kilometres (28.5) north-east of Launceston. Take the A3 north-east for 31 kilometres (19 miles) and turn off onto the gravel Mt Barrow Road (C404), which is steep, winding and sometimes closed by snow.
