Perth

Perth sits on the plains just outside of Launceston with views out to the Great Western Tiers mountain range.

What’s special about Perth?

  • A number of historic churches and inns.
  • Sculptures at the Lions Train Park.

Pick up a National Trust brochure (available at the Post Office) which covers more than 40 historic buildings in the town. It will take you past the notable Baptist and Methodist churches, some private homes and historic shop fronts. The Leather Bottle Inn is the oldest building in the town, built in 1830, and if you look closely you will see the handmade nails used in its construction.

See the wooden carved sculptures at the Lions Train Park and sample the unique leatherwood honey at the Tasmanian Honey Company. Down by the bridge is an ideal place for an afternoon picnic, overlooking the water.
A short drive will take you into Launceston, where you will find some of Tasmania’s best restaurants and leafy city parks.

More things to do:

Eskleigh- a grand old two-storey residence.
Gibbet Hill- site of a bushranger’s hanging.

The story of Perth:

Perth was settled in 1821, named after Perth in Scotland. It was first explored in the early 1800s by Europeans and Governor Lachlan Macquarie chose Perth as a future township, resulting in important historic buildings being erected. In 1836 it was proclaimed as a township.
