What’s special about Arthur River?

From Arthur River you can head into the Tarkine Wilderness Reserve forests or take a cruise on the lower reaches of the Arthur River. The Arthur River runs through tall eucalypt forests and rainforests out to the sea. This small town is also the base from which you can venture out on four-wheel-drive beach and forest exploration trips.

The town borders the Arthur-Pieman River Protected Area and you will find facilities for camping, picnics and barbecues. Keep an eye out for the plentiful wildlife and bird species including Tasmanian rosellas, wedge-tail eagles and orange-breasted parrots.

The Western Explorer route is unsealed and takes you to Corinna on the Pieman River, a little more than 100 kilometres (63 miles) south. Be prepared for all types of weather. The west coast receives the full impact of the Roaring Forties, so make sure you have warm clothing and wet weather gear at all times of the year.

The story of Arthur River:
The Arthur River was named after Sir George Arthur, Lieutenant Governor of Van Diemens Land between 1824 and 1836.

Travel directions:
To get to Arthur River take the A2 Highway for 50 kilometres (31 miles) beyond Smithton to Marrawah then continue south on an unsealed road for 14 kilometres (9 miles).
