Melbourne based Aluka come to SAC to launch their debut album Space!

Since forming in 2008 the trio have evolved to become Melbourne’s finest experimental vocal group. Forming a band without instruments was not the initial idea – they simply enjoyed singing together so much it just seemed to naturally evolve.

The wait for their debut album has been a long one, but it is now obvious why! Not only is this intricate album unique in its vocal ingenuity and sophistication. It is also an exercise in creative and complex production.

Each track has been recorded in a carefully selected location: including an echo-filled stairwell, a World War II bunker, a swimming pool, multiple bathrooms and a chook shed. Aluka embraced the nuances of each space to create an exhilarating collection of sounds, heightening the sentiment behind each song.

Their journey up until this point has been successful: they have graced the stage of the Sydney Opera House and toured through the festival circuit, even bagging a special commendation at the Adelaide Fringe. Pop songstresses such as Lisa Mitchell, Missing Higgins and Clare Bowditch have even borrowed their vocal tapestries for recordings and live performances.

As a gorgeous exploration of the female voice and its possibilities, the intricacies of three incredible vocalists are really showcased in Aluka. But with ‘Space’, something more is on offer… beyond the lyrics, and beyond the style itself, there’s a few secret stories hidden in the production of this genre-bending record.

The only thing more captivating than exploring the depths of such magnificently recorded songs is to experience them live.
