Being a part of something bigger while also being apart from it is something keenly felt by Tasmanians. We wouldn’t be who we are if ‘the Mainland’ wasn’t hovering over us, and we can’t help feeling just a bit different, and at the same time a little bit special, because of it.
As Tasmanians we may be a small cog in a bigger machine but we are also fiercely independent; and while we may be viewed as geographically remote we build supportive tight-knit communities and grow our own strong creative language.
The Art of Silver got to thinking about relationships like that, how being ‘a part’ of something larger yet ‘apart’ from it gives us a special opportunity for reflection.
We have been inspired to interpret these ideas in a myriad of ways, using silver as our principal medium. In all the pieces there will be a sense of linkage, of relationships, some attracting, some nurturing, some directly contrasting, but each will tell a story.
They might even tell a story about Tasmania…
