Divided by cultural differences and the Cold War, Benjamin Britten and Dmitri Shostakovich found common ground in the language of music. Each was touched by the music of the other and each discerned in the other the sound of the individual struggling to be heard. Acclaimed Swiss soprano Maya Boog sings Britten’s orchestral song cycle Les illuminations, settings of strange and wonderful poems by Arthur Rimbaud. Britten’s Four Sea Interludes are magnificent tone poems in their own right and Shostakovich’s Symphony No 1 presents a fresh-voiced young composer at the start of a remarkable career. Arvo Pärt’s Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten is a fitting tribute to the English composer in this, his centenary year.
