Coward’s plays serve no great social purpose in that they are true entertainments and yet are of significant social value as they transport audiences to a world of glorious escape away from our surrounding political and economic pressures. These plays hold relevance today to release us from the immediacy of earthbound worries, especially significant as they were all written in 1936 - a time of world depression, hunger marches and war.
Coward’s plays and songs were primarily vehicles to announce his own elegant style and many talents to the world as he was a sensation as an actor and playwright on both sides of the Atlantic. He achieved a massive output - sixty produced plays, over three hundred published songs, plus screenplays, volumes of short stories, autobiography and fiction - all contributing to his legend.
