THE THEATRE ROYAL PRESENTS BANGARRA DANCE THEATRE'S PRODUCTION
KINSHIP by Bangarra Dance Theatre
“...highly theatrical... striking, layered, surprising... absolutely transporting”
SUN HERALD
Rekindling the Indigenous culture of Australia, internationally acclaimed Bangarra Dance Theatre has created an original and breathtaking theatrical experience – Kinship by award-winning choreographer Stephen Page.
Kinship opens with traditional Aboriginal dance Fire – the meaning of Bangarra is ‘to make fire’ in Wiradjuri language. This sets the scene for Brolga and ID, afusion of traditional and contemporary music and dance.
In Fire and Brolga Stephen Page explores the relationship between Indigenous people, creatures and the land, reflecting the intrinsic link between animals and humans and the way Aboriginal song and dance mimics nature and animals as part of its story-telling.
ID investigates what it means to be Aboriginal in the 21st century, asking important questions of identity. Based on personal observations of people tracing their bloodlines and re-connecting with traditional culture, ID provokes perceptions in contemporary society.
Bangarra creates a truly Australian theatrical experience that connects the spirit of traditional culture with our contemporary lives, creating inspiring dance theatre productions of integrity and excellence that resonate with people throughout Australia and the world.
