Sebastian Lang-Lessing returns to Tasmania to conduct the orchestra that he nurtured for eight years. Also making a return visit is US-based pianist Kirill Gerstein, recent recipient of a coveted Gilmore Artist Award. Rachmaninov throws down the gauntlet to all pianists in his brilliant Piano Concerto No 1. At around the same time that he dashed off the concerto, Rachmaninov wrote The Rock, a symphonic poem in the tradition of Tchaikovsky. Brahms’s Symphony No 4 – the composer’s final symphony – is a glorious summing up of a lifetime’s achievements.
