The first SteamFest was held at Sheffield in 1994 and it has been held ever since each year on Tasmania’s March long weekend. It’s the Redwater Creek Steam and Heritage Society’s major fundraiser and is held in conjunction with the following groups and clubs:
The Tasmanian Tractor Pulling and Vintage Tractor Association
The Howe Family collection of steam engines and vintage equipment
The Kentish Lions Club
The event has won numerous awards, including Community Event of the Year 2011 in the Tasmanian Community Achievement Awards; 2011 Associatioin of Tourist and Heritage Railways Australia award for Tourist Promotion, and the 2010 Inaugural Cradle Coast Award for Best Festival. In 2013 SteamFest will be its 19th year - each year has been bigger than the previous one, and this one will be no exception.
The weekend features extensive displays of vintage machinery, train rides, traction engines, steam rollers, vintage cars, farm tractors, tractor pulling competitions, demonstrations of farm practices from the steam era – e.g. sheep shearing, threshing, stone crushing etc.- stationary engines, craft displays, bands, entertainment for both adults and children.
The catering at SteamFest this year is fresh and local; berries and ice cream, hot spuds and P3 produce Ritual Coffee and a wide variety of food stalls, sure to cater for the needs of young and old while you discover all that is on the SteamFest site.
Building on its history of providing entertainment during the festival program, SteamFest 2013 will feature an expanded program of Tasmanian musicians and entertainers - all part of Sheffield's third Music Festival, run to coincide with SteamFest.
SteamFest’s a great day’s outing for all the family and not to be missed.
Over the years many hundreds of photos have been taken at SteamFest and you can see them on our website. Further information and contact details are also available on the website.
