"William Yang is one of Australia’s greatest story tellers. The fact that his stories are image based makes them all the more powerful and unique."
Quoted from Stills Gallery website.
Born in Northern Queensland, multiaward winning artist William Yang moved to Sydney in 1969. He worked as a freelance photographer documenting Sydney’s social life, which included the glamorous celebrity set and the hedonistic, sub-cultural, gay community.
In 1989 he began to perform monologues with slide projection. These theatre pieces have become the main expression of his work. They tell personal stories and explore issues of identity. He has done eleven full-length works and most have toured internationally.
Sadness, arguably his most successful piece was made into an award winning film by Tony Ayres in 1999. This and Tony’s China Dolls can be seen in the exhibition Made in China, Australia at the Burnie Regional Art Gallery, February 1 - March 3, 2013. Curated by Greg Leong for Salamanca Arts Centre the exhibition is part of a national tour.
This presentation is the artist talk for the exhibition and co-presented by Salamanca Arts Centre and Contemporary Art Spaces Tasmania.
Made in China, Australia is a CAST Touring exhibition initiated by Salamanca Arts Centre with support from Burnie Regional Art Gallery. The exhibition and tour have received funding support through the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy Contemporary Touring Initiative, the Australia Council, Arts Tasmania and the Gordon Darling Foundation.
