Discover Tasmania

Explore the Western Wilderness

If you’re feeling wild and ready for adventure, Tasmania’s western wilderness is naturally an exciting playground. Raft down the mighty Franklin River, carving your way through rainforest-lined world heritage wilderness or soar above craggy Frenchman’s Cap on a scenic flight.

The west is also home to Tasmania’s premier multi-day walk, the Overland Track, taking you from Cradle Mountain on a true wilderness experience to Lake St Clair, Australia’s deepest freshwater lake. There are other bushwalking opportunities for all fitness levels ranging from the challenging South Coast Track through to lighter walks including the Dove Lake circuit at Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park.

If walking is not your style, hop on a dune buggy tour at Henty Dunes near Strahan or prepare to be thrilled on a white-knuckled jet boat ride up the King River. It doesn’t matter if you seek an adrenalin rush or soft adventure experience, the west coast can provide.

For a more gentle style of adventure, journey 35 kilometres into the wilderness past scenic gorges and virgin rainforest on the West Coast Wilderness Railway or take a leisurely cruise down the glassy Gordon River aboard a cruise.
