Just 25 minutes (commuting distance) south of Hobart, the Huon Valley will immerse you in a world of diversity and discovery taking you through a seemingly ageless place - a region of waterways and wilderness, art and craft, forests and fishing boats, orchards and vineyards. It also has the last original operating bush tramway (railway) at Ida Bay - the only 2ft gauge line in Australia.
Rich in pioneer heritage, the Huon Valley, Far South and D'Entrecasteaux Channel is noted for an exceptional variety of landscapes.
From the dark still waters of the tranquil Huon River and white sandy beaches of the Channel, to the soaring forests of mighty Eucalyptus Regnans (the world's tallest flowering plant) and the wild and rugged Far South of Tasmania, this region is a must see for every visitor.
There is no right or wrong way to tour the Huon Valley. The quiet country roads and relatively short distances make this compact region easy to get around. However, there really is so much to see and do here that we recommend you drive slowly and stop regularly to truly appreciate the scenery, history, fresh produce and friendly locals of the region.
Main towns include Huonville, Cygnet, Geeveston, Southport, Dover, Cockle Creek, Woodbridge, Kettering (the boarding point for the ferry to Bruny Island), Snug, Margate and Kingston.
