Wynyard

Wynyard is a centre of agriculture and sits on the banks of the Inglis River sheltered by Table Cape, flat-topped and fertile.

What’s special about Wynyard?

  • During spring the town comes alive with blooming tulips and festivities.
  • Situated on a beautiful stretch of Bass Strait coast, with beaches and bays in both directions.
If you are heading to Wynyard during late September/early October, be sure to get involved in ‘Bloomin’ Tulips,’ a three-week long calendar of festivities surrounding the tulips coming into bloom. Choose from a range of events including the Tulips at Twilight cocktail party.

Take a boat out, fish, ride a horse, swing a golf club or simply walk a coastal path. Explore Fossil Bluff, not far from the town centre, where you can learn about the age and structure of the soft sandstone bluff and follow a path to the top for spectacular views.

The Wonders of Wynyard is the local visitor centre with a world class collection of veteran Ford cars and local art to enjoy. Take a drive behind Wynyard and you will find small villages dotted along the country roads, and beautiful patchwork green, gold and dark brown farmland.

The story of Wynyard:
Wynyard’s Table Cape was first named by Bass and Flinders in 1798, but it was not until 1841 that John King chose to settle on land in the Wynyard area. The town was later named after Lieutenant-General Edward Buckle Wynyard of the New South Wales Corps and grew rapidly with the introduction of a timber mill and wharf.

Travel directions:
Wynyard is about 45 minutes’ drive (60 kilometres/37 miles) west of Devonport on the Bass Highway. You can fly direct to Melbourne, King Island and Three Hummock Island from Burnie Airport, which is actually in Wynyard.
